The retina is a thin layer of light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye. Light rays are focused onto the retina by the cornea and the lens, then transmitted to the brain by the optic nerve and interpreted as the images you see. When the retina is damaged by disease, vision loss can happen gradually and often without early warning signs, which is why regular eye exams and early treatment matter.

Georgia Eye Clinic offers medical retina care led by Dr. Stephanie Lynch, a board-certified ophthalmologist with fellowship training in Medical Retina and Uveitis from Emory University. Dr. Lynch is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists and has many years of experience performing retina injections and laser surgery.

Retina Conditions We Treat

  • Macular degeneration (AMD): both dry and wet forms. Care may include monitoring, AREDS supplements, and anti-VEGF injections for wet AMD. Learn more about macular degeneration.
  • Diabetic retinopathy: diabetes can damage the blood vessels of the retina, often before you notice any change in vision. Routine diabetic eye exams help catch it early. Learn more about diabetic eye care.
  • Retinal vein occlusions: blockages in the veins that drain the retina, which can cause swelling and blurred vision.
  • Retinal tears: a tear in the retina can lead to retinal detachment if it is not treated promptly.
  • Uveitis and scleritis: inflammation inside or on the surface of the eye, managed in coordination with rheumatologists and infectious disease specialists when needed.

Retina Treatments

  • Retina injections: anti-VEGF medications such as Lucentis, Eylea and Avastin help block the abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage seen in wet macular degeneration and other retinal conditions.
  • Retinal laser treatment: used to seal leaking blood vessels or treat certain retinal tears.
  • Advanced retinal imaging: detailed diagnostic testing to detect retinal disease early and track how it responds to treatment.
